September Synthesis

As the summer heat dissipates and we approach the autumn equinox the darker days and longer nights mean more time for reading (and writing) for me, my cat (above), and I hope for you too.

Tahlequah's Grief
An orca calf died off the coast of British Columbia and the calf’s mother carried her dead daughter through the Salish Sea in a funeral procession that logged a thousand miles and lasted seventeen days. I wrote about her grief and mine at Good Letters.

A Meager Offering for the Heartbroken
Bad news comes for us, and bad news comes for the ones we love. And though we have all suffered in unique and terrible ways, we have nothing on hand to staunch our beloved’s wound, no first aid kit for grief, no cure or easy solace.

NEW BOOKS BY PACIFIC NORTHWEST AUTHORS (AND FRIENDS)

Reading Carey Taylor’s poetry is like walking the beach with a friend who pays attention to everything—the weather, water, rocks, shells, and shore-life—and enriches your experience of the once familiar with her unique insight, images, and inviting leaps of language. Surprising and delightful. Reach for The Lure of Impermanence and you’ll relish a new friendship.

It’s hard to imagine a more welcoming invitation and guide to mortality, synchronicity, and purpose in life than this memoir and its author, the genial and curious “bumbling mystic” Constance Mears. Though her book is framed by self-penned obituaries, Mears’ musings on death—and the darker aspects of life—are never morbid. More often her encounters and prose are delightfully upbeat and humorous. The future might be murky, but Mears’ writing is crystal clear, deftly illuminating her past, and invoking awe as she describes the powerful beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Join Constance Mears on her spiritual quest and you’ll be inspired in your own bumbling toward the light.
